Wedding Venues in Jacó, Costa Rica: A Photographer’s Guide to the Best Backdrops
Choosing a wedding venue in Jacó isn’t just about the guest count or the catering menu — it’s about what that venue will look like in your photos and film for the rest of your life. As a photography and videography team that’s spent years shooting weddings across Jacó and the Central Pacific, we look at venues a little differently than a planner does. We’re thinking about where the light falls at 4pm, whether there’s room for a drone shot of the ceremony, and whether the backdrop still holds up once the sun goes down and the dancing starts.
Here’s our honest, photographer’s-eye guide to what makes a Jacó venue work beautifully on camera — and a few types of venues worth considering as you build your shortlist.
What Makes a Venue Great for Photos and Film
Before naming specific places, it helps to know what we’re actually looking for when we scout a venue:
Golden hour access. Jacó’s beaches face west, which means sunset ceremonies here are hard to beat — but only if the venue’s ceremony spot actually has an open view to the horizon, not a hedge or building in the way.
Open sky for drone footage. Most of our Signature and Luxury packages include drone photography where it’s permitted, and venues with open lawns, rooftop decks, or beachfront clearings give us room to capture the kind of sweeping aerial shots that make a wedding film feel cinematic.
A mix of light and shade. The best venues give us shaded spots for midday portraits (so nobody’s squinting) and open spots for golden hour, plus enough contrast in the architecture or landscape that every shot doesn’t look the same.
Sound-friendly ceremony spaces. For videography, wind and surf noise matter as much as visuals. Hilltop and garden venues set back from the waves tend to give us cleaner audio for vows than a spot right at the shoreline.
Beachfront Venues in Jacó
If a barefoot, ocean-view ceremony is the dream, Jacó’s beachfront resorts and beach clubs deliver dependably beautiful light almost year-round. Oceanfront properties along the main beach and toward Playa Hermosa give us that classic Central Pacific look — palm silhouettes, wide sand, and a horizon that turns gold and pink at sunset. These venues photograph especially well for couples who want a relaxed, resort-style wedding with the ocean as the main character in every shot.
The trade-off: beachfront ceremonies are more exposed to wind and afternoon crowds during high season, so timing the ceremony close to sunset (rather than midday) makes a noticeable difference in both comfort and photos.
Hilltop and Rainforest Venues Near Jacó
A short drive up into the hills above Jacó opens up a completely different look: elevated ocean views, lush rainforest framing, and dramatic golden-hour light pouring across the treeline. Hilltop estates and rainforest-view properties in this area are a favorite for couples who want their wedding photos to feel like they could only have been taken in Costa Rica — not just “a beach,” but this specific jungle-meets-ocean landscape.
These venues also tend to sit further from the surf, which (as noted above) means better audio for vows and speeches, and often more shade for a comfortable midday portrait session before the ceremony.
Private Villas and Intimate Estates
For smaller weddings and elopements, private villas around Jacó offer a level of control you don’t get at a resort: your own pool, your own sunset view, no other guests wandering into the background of your ceremony shot. Villa-style venues also give us more freedom to move — shooting from multiple angles, using the whole property as a backdrop across the day, and building a wedding film that feels like a real story rather than a single fixed location.
If you’re planning something smaller and want to see how a villa venue and a photography package fit together, our Intimate and Essential photography packages are built with exactly this kind of setting in mind.
Questions to Ask Any Venue Before You Book
A few questions worth asking before you sign a venue contract, from a photography and film perspective:
- Is drone photography permitted on the property, and are there any restrictions on timing or flight paths?
- Where does the sun set relative to the ceremony space, and is there a backup spot for a rainy-season afternoon?
- Are there noise restrictions (some hotels and beach clubs have curfews) that could affect an evening reception or first dance?
- Is there a shaded area nearby for portraits between the ceremony and reception?
We’re always happy to look at a venue you’re considering — even before you book — and tell you honestly how it’s likely to photograph and film. It’s a quick conversation that can save a lot of second-guessing later. And if you’re still deciding on a venue and want help with the full picture — contracts, timelines, vendors — our sister company Pacific Weddings handles full destination wedding planning across Costa Rica.
